Before in-row and other close-coupled cooling strategies were introduced 10 years ago, most data center facilities were built using perimeter-style CRAH (computer room air handler) and CRAC (computer room air conditioner) systems. Even today, larger enterprise, colocation, and cloud sites use downflow perimeter units with raised access floors for air distribution.
Many people don’t realize, however, that today’s perimeter CRAH/CRAC is very different from those installed a few years ago. Variable speed EC (electronically commutated) fans and intelligent control systems enable today’s designs to more efficiently match a data center’s cooling demand.
So…what if you’re the proud owner of a handful of 3- to 15-year-old computer room AC units with legacy controls and traditional squirrel cage fans? Call Compu Dynamics, of course. We may be able to retrofit your equipment with upgraded digital controls and network your systems together so they perform as a team. In utility lingo, upgrades like this are often called “custom retrofits,” and they can save you up to 30 percent of your energy bill. Even better, we may be able to replace those old, belt-driven fans with modern, direct-drive EC fans. When implemented together, we’ve seen savings of over 50 percent in energy costs. For a single AC unit, this upgrade can put thousands of dollars back into your organization’s pocket every year.
This isn’t even the best part. Many utility companies offer rebates to customers who invest in energy reduction technologies—even paying 50 percent of the cost! Rebates vary from one area to another, but several local power providers will pay half of the total cost of the upgrade. Utilities are highly motivated to spend their money to reduce the amount of your money that is spent on energy, so let them do it! Their contribution could double your return on investment (ROI) and make you a superstar in the eyes of your Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
